In the time that I've worked for John, I have felt valued, heard and respected. Often times he pushed me to see beyond my own perspective and think more like a leader. Other times he listened and despite having a conflicting opinion, embraced what I was saying and helped me problem solve. He also has a compassion that can see outside of the workplace and gives you a sense that having a job doesn't mean your personal life needs to wait at the door for 5:30 pm. In addition to that, his dedication to creating a workplace culture that breeds happiness and positivity is infectious to those around him. All of these things made John a really wonderful boss, and they coupled well with John's best skill - training.
I have never seen someone so dedicated and enthusiastic to training in all my time in sales, and I've attended a ton of sales trainings. His gregarious nature is apparent as soon as you meet him, and that is what allows him to be so influential during trainings. It's not that he has an incredible training deck that he reads from verbatim or has a methodical step by step process that he follows each time- it's his ability to tailor his message on the fly to appeal to all walks of life that makes him so special. Whether it's a disgruntled salesperson, someone who is brand new to sales, or just someone who already feels like they know everything, John will find a way to get through to them in a way that will leave them excited as well.
He also possesses the unique ability to make everyone think about sales differently which breathes new life into a sales staff that has grown stale. John teaches AEs how to talk to their clients in a way that strays from product only discussions to a more agnostic approach. This almost always yields a larger budget because clients are being talked to in a way that isn't typical with media reps. He has a knack for finding more money because of this strategy.
Over the last 3 years, I have talked with countless salespeople and clients who love and respect John for his ideas, attitude and because of how much he's helped them grow their accounts / business. He inspires people to try harder and think differently and because of his nature, he usually has an easy-go at this. It is this "x-factor" that makes him such an asset in a way that cannot be measured on a spreadsheet. He is flexible enough to welcome processes and ideas that are new to him, injecting his own style into any material that needs to be trained. It is his affability and adaptability that made John a joy to work for and just plain fun to sit in on / conduct trainings with. He makes them enjoyable, informative and memorable -- and those aren't words often used to describe sales trainings.
John gave a FANTASTIC presentation at our annual Tennessee Turfgrass Education Conference on managing a millennial workforce. He was entertaining, educational, and held the attention of 300+ attendees for more than 90 minutes. I'd recommend him to anyone looking for a speaker on the millennial generation.
John is an excellent motivator with a refreshing approach to sales. In an often jargon filled world of endless powerpoints, John managed to leave clients and our sales team armed with relevant data rather than boring stats. More than once I heard clients say they'd never had a meeting like that or that it was actually a fun experience. Our sales team is a blend of ages, experience levels, and knowledge based. Rather than train to a certain set, he took the time to tailor presentations or even meet individually to ensure everyone was a valued member of the discussion. And it is all about discussion with John. I think he may actually hate presentations. He'd much rather have a conversation to get know a client or a team member better. Under his guidance I felt challenged to take on more responsibility while also narrowing my focus on ways I could really impact our company and myself. And I was always respected for these efforts in a truly thoughtful way. John is a great supporter and advocate. I consider myself lucky to have learned from and worked with him.
John is a true leader and professional. He is able to lead teams, teach them and empower them. John has been instrumental in helping me grow my digital business throughout the years. I know that I can count on him to help strengthen the trust and partnership between Summit and my clients. He is so knowledgeable about the products and the processes- but he communicates the information to both his sales teams and the clients, in a way that we understand. John is down to earth and can connect with anyone he comes across, which helps us to quickly lower the walls with clients. John truly became a partner for me in my job. He always made time to help me and answer all of my questions, which can be a lot at times. I could count on him to be open and truthful about which products and services would work best for each client. He's built a team of sales people who trust him and a large network of clients throughout the country who feel the same way.
I had the pleasure of working with John at Summit Media. In John's role as the Senior VP of Digital & Marketing Strategies, I viewed him as a true leader. He has mastered the art of mentoring and helping me grow both professionally and personally . John helped me understand and embrace the every changing digital world. I've enjoyed his market visits to Omaha and admire his relationship building with my current customers and prospects who were eager to learn more about the digital marketing. In John, I quickly found a true digital leader and adviser who helped me grow my business and increased my sales.
John is a fantastic wing man in the digital sales world. I've had the pleasure of knowing and working with John but most importantly watching him presenting digital solutions. He has a way of listening to clients and following up with real world solutions that work. I learned a great deal from John and his smiling face was always a welcomed sight in our market.
John is an amazing mentor, leader and coworker. In the time that I worked with John, he taught me how to be more efficient in my sales efforts and how to be an asset to my clients. The tools that John taught me will stay with me for life. He is an amazing asset to any company, and I feel lucky to have been able to work with John!
John is a phenomenal supervisor and mentor! He wins over clients and account execs by educating them on multi-platform marketing tactics and becoming their trusted advisor. His quarterly trips to market always resulted in double-digit percent increases in revenue and a sales staff better equipped to sustain that momentum. John is great at engaging with a crowd of any size and simplifying complex concepts. As the digital advertising space continues to grow and transform, he brings others up-to-speed while holding true to marketing fundamentals.
Few people have the opportunity to report to a manager who is also a coach and mentor. I had that distinct pleasure when John was my manager. John is still my coach and mentor to this day. I worked with John for a year, but the amount of wisdom, knowledge, and support he poured into me will last a lifetime. I have learned, grown, and developed because of John's tutelage. I felt he was invested in me as an employee and a person. He worked daily to ensure I was empowered to excel, exceed goals, and overcome everyday hurdles. I was most impressed with John's ability to coach each individual in ways he or she needed most. His management style was not "his way or the highway." He easily identified the best way to coach someone, and he adapted to each person's needs. I think this trait is mostly lost in 2016, but John excels in this area. He takes on a very passionate role in training, and I see his daily immersion in the emerging digital ad platforms and trends. He will tell you all about them - trust me! I cannot give a higher recommendation for John as a manager, coach, and mentor. He has always encouraged me in ways that have made me better. I am grateful to have worked with and for him.
In the world of advertising, with deadlines every day and multiple projects all vying for my attention simultaneously, it is easy to become frustrated and even distracted by the work that needs to be done. John has been an invaluable resource when it comes to deciphering what is important. But he doesn’t just stop there. I remember a time that I discovered a fascinating study that looked at how different age demographics interact with types of media and the ways these interactions are changing. I sent it to John, expecting him to maybe send it out to the sales staff in an email or use it for talking points with someone else’s customer in the future. Instead he replied, “This is awesome! I’ve just volunteered you to present it in our next staff meeting.” This is what separates John, in my mind, from any other manager I’ve ever had. He not only is a constant source of research and relevant information about the media landscape, but he also teaches by INVOLVING those he leads, not just telling them what to do. He is also possibly the most charismatic person I’ve ever met and inspires everyone around him to always continue learning. As an employee, I hope to always have the opportunity to work for a “John”. He is the benchmark of true leadership.
A true leader, revenue generator and problem solver, John defines the lines between what it is to be a manager and mentor. On any given day with a completely packed schedule John is the first of the managers at the Knoxville News Sentinel to tackle a problem and bring the solution to the table or necessary channels to achieve a goal. Working with John in the short time I have there are 3- key elements to his leadership style that resonate; first, John is transparent with a tactful and calculated thought through process to delivering a point. Second John has the ability to communicate with all walks and career leveled individuals from executives to entry level employees. Lastly, John has the unusual talent to make people smile and laugh in high pressure situations always landing the deal and following through with his commitment to his clients, company and co-workers. John is a mover and shaker and a valuable team member to any company that is lucky to scoop him up.
John has an energy and drive that is contagious to those around him, and creates a work environment that others are excited to be around every day. When John joined Scripps Digital I knew that he would be a strong contributor to the development of a successful digital sales team, but I did not realize I was gaining such an influential thought leader, who would inspire the rest of the team as well. He was a natural leader coming in, and quickly earned the respect from those around him, in both a team and leadership capacity. Any organization would be fortunate to have him affecting positive change and innovation, while serving as a leader to those around him.
